In comments made in today’s Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Tupper Lake Mayor Mickey Desmarais and the Village Board have staked a position that could lead to the end of Big Tupper skiing and the continued downward spiral of Tupper Lake’s economy.

According to ARISE Chairman Jim LaValley, “The Mayor and Trustees appear to have given a rubber-stamp statement to positions held by opposition with groups such as The Adirondack Council, which are working hard to kill the Adirondack Club and Resort, stepping into the arena of interfering with private property rights. I’m puzzled why the Village would feel entitled to make such a threat on a private property owner’s rights. This is like telling a homeowner you better live in the property you own, or else.

The developers have always maintained that if the ACR project is approved and moves forward, skiing will continue at Big Tupper. People have lost sight of the fact that the ACR investors gave ARISE permission to open the ski area, and they can just as easily take it away. This is not a threat, it is a fact. If there is no ACR there is no Big Tupper skiing now or forever, period. I don’t understand why they can’t understand this.

The Mayor & Trustee’s statement alludes to a concern that the developers are not focused on skiing or keeping Big Tupper open to the public. It has never been suggested that the mountain would be closed to skiing if the ACR gets approved. The Mayor or Trustees have never met with the ACR developers to express this concern. The developers have made it very clear that they will meet with anyone at any time to address any concern.

The Village never raised this issue as a question or concern during the months of Adjudicatory Hearings. The timing of this is very questionable. Unlike ARISE & the hundreds of volunteers who have worked hard on a plan for economic growth & continued skiing at Big Tupper. We’ve seen no alternative plan for economic growth from the Village.

We encourage all supporters of economic growth in Tupper Lake to contact the Village and express their outrage. ”
